The chaotic lifestyle and the mental & physical pressure due to increasingly industrialized and metropolitan environment has lead to rise in the cases of hypertension worldwide. Today, this disease is more commonly regarded as 'The silent killer’. High blood pressure (or hypertension) is a medical condition in which the arterial blood pressure rises. High blood pressure is said to be present if it is persistently above 140/90 mmHg.
Sometimes lack of physical activity, obesity, tobacco consumption, excessive alcohol intake, prolonged periods of stress and anxiety, excessive sodium intake and/or low potassium intake in the diet, or a family history of high blood pressure can be the factors causing the disease. High blood pressure can also be caused by kidney disease, hormonal disorders, thyroid disease, adrenal gland disease, and the use of oral contraceptives. The symptoms of hypertension may appear initially as a pain at the back of the head and neck, dizziness, palpitations, pain in the heart region, frequent urination, nervous tension, fatigue and difficulty in breathing.
Herbal Remedies for Hypertension

- Prepare a mixture of powdered melon (Cucumis melo) seeds and dried poppy (Papaver somniferum) seeds in equal proportions. Have a tsp of the mixture with water twice daily.
- Having a tsp of powdered fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seeds with water empty stomach in the morning is said to be effective in treating hypertension.
- Prepare sweet jelly of gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), carrots (Daucus carota) and apples (Malus sylveslris). Have it daily to keep a check on hypertension.
- Roast a few garlic (Allium sativum) cloves in a tbsp of clarified butter. Consume 2-3 g of the same twice daily.
- Prepare a mixture of powdered fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seeds, cumin (Cuminum cyminum) seeds. Add sugar to taste. Take a tsp of the same to lower blood pressure levels.
- Consuming fresh basil (Ocimum sanctum) and neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves on an empty stomach everyday is good for controlling high blood pressure levels.
- Asparagus (Asparagus racemosus) taken in the form of powder or juice is used to combat high blood pressure.
- Take ½ tsp of dried and powdered sarpagandha (Rauvolfia serpentina) roots thrice daily with water or milk. It is believed to be beneficial for those suffering from hypertension.
- Having 1/4th tsp of almond (Prunus amygdalus) oil mixed in warm milk is said to control blood pressure due to stress and anxiety.
- Another effective remedy for hypertension is to boil the arjuna (Terminalia arjuna ) bark in water. Prepare a decoction and take 25-30 ml twice daily.
- Consuming about 2 tbsp of onion (Allium cepa) juice with equal proportions of honey is said to be helpful in controlling hypertension.
- Extract juice from 30-35 curry (Murraya koenigii) leaves. Strain and mix the same in a cup of water. Add ½ tsp of lemon (Citrus limon) juice to taste. Have it empty stomach every morning.
- Prepare paste of 2-3 g of garlic cloves and take it with a glass of buttermilk twice daily.
- Drinking a cup of fresh orange (Citrus sinensis) juice twice a day is effective for patients suffering from hypertension.
- Take a tsp of ginger juice (Zingiber officinale) and to it, mix a tsp each of cumin seeds powder and honey. Have it twice daily.
Balanced Diet, Exercise and Rest is a Must!
Including a diet rich in green vegetables and fresh fruits is a must for patients suffering from high BP. Consume foods high in minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, etc. Vegetables such as potatoes, spinach, yellow pumpkin, carrots, bitter gourd and drumsticks are useful for those suffering from high BP. Fruits like grapes, bananas, guavas, oranges, watermelons and apples are good in high blood pressure.
Cut down on diet rich in salt and sugar content, trans fatty acids and hydrogenated oils. Fatty dairy products and deep fried foods should be avoided to keep a check on the disease. Avoid excessive consumption of sweets and chocolates. Patient should reduce tobacco and alcohol intake to lower blood pressure levels.
People suffering from hypertension should follow regular exercise routine. Mild exercises such as brisk walking or yogic breathing exercises are helpful in keeping a check on blood pressure levels. Patient should take proper rest and at least 7-8 hours of sleep daily. It is important to manage day-to-day stress levels and avoid strain, anxiety and anger. One must develop a calm and cheerful attitude to lead a happy and healthy life.
